Archery - 2006

News (10/19/2006) Turkey - Bow

Here are the pose and damage inflicted shots.
I'll link out to the damage shots, in case people prefer not to see them.

PSE Diablo 65#
RadialX STL 200s w/Blazers
NAP Spitfire 100gr (NOT Gobbler Getter's)
VBG Triangle sight
Whisker Biscuit DX QS
G5 Peep

This time, I took no chances in wounding a bird.
I aimed at mid neck and figured I would get a kill or a clean miss.

I dont have the knack of displaying my bow naturally in the trophy shot yet.

News (10/03/2006) 4 Point Buck - Bow

To save people on dial-up, I am going to link to most of the pictures.
After careful CSI type analysis of the scene, this is what we guess.

THE SHOT

After recovering what was left of the deer and finding the entrance and exit wounds, we saw that the shot was just about perfect height from the back of the shoulder. Now, I distinctly remember trying to hit a little lower, which with the blood, made me think I hit the heart or arteries (but you guys said arteries would spurt). Once we got out of the woods, we thought about the shot as we had looked at it in the morning before we started tracking.

After relooking at the spot where the deer bucked and ran off, we are guessing he took a step forward and down as I released. The ground here is wet from a torrential Friday rain, and it was obvious in that section there were some hoofprints and then his deeper JUMP prints. So, if he had not stepped down, I probably would have had good alignment and been in the bottom of the lung on the near side.
He was also slightly quartering towards me, which is was also shown both in the prints and in the entrance and exit. When I drew and was releasing he had been broadside, so we think he dropped his 'stand side' leg as he stepped forward, and the hoof prints show a little spread there as well.

RECOVERY:
Just before I started my tracking last night I jumped on the PSE board and read their Guide:Tracking wounded deer by Woody Williams, and tossed some toilet paper in my pack as my neighbor and I went to track. That toilet paper saved the day. This morning we were able to follow really obvious squares of toilet paper (and some scraps when I started to run out) right back to where we had left off the night before. I'm buying some flag tape soon. The rain would have ruined the TP, but it held off.

Once we got back to the last marking, we looked around a while for more blood and there was just none to be found. So, using the last 3 markers as a guide (each about 12 years apart), I started down the most obivious trail (which was not 'obvious' at all. But, I was trying to think like a deer. Dad went out ahead and using my voice as a guide, while I stilled squat walked looking for blood, he started doing half circles out in front of me checking the trail from side to side. About 50 yards from the last marker (about 150-200yds total), we found the deer. Coyotes has eaten just about every single part.

Warning: Not for the faint of heart

ARROW and BROADHEAD - Entrance and Exit
There was a pretty good entrance wound and a sizable exit.
The arrow went in the ribcage, and the exit was just behind the ribcage.
There was no bile, or mucus on the arrow at all, and the blood was dark red.
It 'might' have clipped the stand side lung, but the material on my Montec has got to be Liver.
Not having BowHunted a deer before, I was not sure what I was looking at at the time.

My first 3D for score, and my second 3D ever.
Blue Stakes: 0,5,8,10,11

Here is an X-Ring (11 on todays card) and then my Dads match. Funny thing was, both arrows were mine.
When I upgraded to the Diablo this year, I got a new dozen arrows and passed my Beman ICS down to Dad.
So, this robinhood cost me around $20.00 (My RadialX first, then rammed by my old Beman ICS)... hehe.

And a wolf from 35 yds, where I almost do the same to my brothers.
I did not take many pics, but the wolf was a neat one even though it is not X-ring shot.

We shot in the last qtr of people and when we left, hunter class, we were ranked 2,3, and 4.
My ranging needs some serious work. I wont be out to Orange stakes for a long, long time.

News (05/22/2006)

Dad and I set up our blind ysterday.

This morning I set up at 7am.
GOBBLE GOBBLE...
I called once.. closer GOBBLE GOBBLE.

Called twice GOBBLE GOBBLE in the field off to my right, closed windows.. that's ok.
I have my decoy set up well.

3 Toms and 2 jakes come into view.
I take aim at 17yds and shoot low.
ARRGGHHH, I had forgot in the excitement to kneel. I was still sitting in my arm chair. My form was all off.

The turkeys shuffle a little bit but the Diablo was so quiet and the blind effective enough that I take another arrow out of my quiver and take aim a second time.

POOF/THUD.
The turkey explodes into the aim and comes down on the nock of the arrow. The arrow did not get pass through.

The turkeys shuffle off and he pops out 15-20 yards fluttering and comes to rest outside my range (no rangefinder and only 1 SGH head left). I wait 10 minutes and he Pops again out another 10 yards. This time though he comes down tail feathers up and seems to do a last gasp and deflates. I call everyone saying I am going to tag out and I call the land owner to bring down his camera.

Sheldon is on his way down and the bird has not stirred for another 10 minutes, so I step out of the blind and stretch. After about 5 minutes he pops again and this time reaches the wood line and flutters and deflates again. About 2 minutes later Sheldon shows up and we walk over to where the turkey is supposed to be.

NOTHING!!!!!

We searched for an hour and half in the woods out to about 200 yards deep and 200 yards wide. Nothing.

Here are some pics of the broadhead and turkey feather.
There were more chest feathers, but this was one from where he laid down the first time.

I 'thought' I hit him good, but after much discussion with my dad and a few others that have bowhunted turkeys around here, this is what they think.

They think that the turkey was ever so slightly turned and I hit it just to the side of the breast plate, since the head did not just bust it. Thinking this resulted in a punch wound to once side and the arms twisted and did not pass the breastplate.

I did not get pass through and when the turkey came down from his first jump the arrows stuck nock first in the ground and came out of him. There was no meat and very little blood on the arrowhead itself and none on the shaft.

We walked in pairs slightly over arms apart 400 yards left, 400 yards right, and 200 (or so) yards deep in the woods. I spent 1.5 hours with my neighbor, my Dad walked it for 2 hours before I got home, and together we walked it for another hour and a half.
We went over it VERY VERY thoroughly.

This is the first game I have ever lost that I can remember. I have shot hundreds of ducks, a moose, a few rabbits, deer, and turkeys.... I am a little discouraged.

Hopefully tomorrow morning he'll return with the tom and jakes and I'll be aiming for the one with a limp.

Well, my neighbor, my dad and I searched high and low for the turkey.
We went 400 yards in 3 directions away from the field.
Nothing. Well, not nothing!

I consider what I did find a once in a lifetime event.
A newborn fawn.

I shot Blazer on my Radial X 200s today

So, last Sunday I was at my Dads and we were shooting around and he tore one of my OEM vanes on my Radial X. Great! I have my Blazers just WAITING to go on and this would be my first. He fletched it up over the week and brought it up today.

Up until this I have only put FP/Judo/SGH through it. But I had a pack of Montec practice heads I got for free and was itching to try them.

I put 1 Montec on the Blazer shaft and 1 on the OEM shaft. I was shooting blue insulation, of which one sheet would stop a Muzzy100. I put out one sheet, semi-shot up.

Shooting 20 yards, 100Gr, Radial X 200s , WB DX QS, previously chrono at 255 @ 26" draw with OEM vanes.

The first arrow with blazers passed right through the insulation like butter, a combination of the CoC head (not the hole puncher Muzzy) and hitting a previously shot area.

I gathered the arrow and put up a new piece of insulation on top of the used one, and backed them with a well worn stuffing filled sack. I shot one Blazer w/Montec and then one OEM w/montec. The OEM was about 1" to the right. The blazer was about 1/2" high.

Hmm... interesting. To verify the rest tuning, we gather the arrows, and go to shoot again.

This is the result. I punched the EXACT SAME HOLES for both arrows!! Pain in the butt getting the broadhead out of the bag. I guess I need to get broadhead target.

I think the lower contact of the Blazers might have reclaimed some FPS and caused me to hit a little high.
I will probably re chrono with Blazers and no-tube peep after Turkey Season.

I also took some pics of the tennis ball I hit with the g5 S.G.H.

News (04/26/2006)

Moved the Archery Videos to google instead of Youtube. Google allows for original size, which is a lot clearer.
Here is a small video of me shooting a tennis ball at around 20 yards.

And some new pictures (shooting at 30 yards):

Puchased a 2006 PSE Diablo.

News (03/09/2006)

I'm 5-7.5" with 26" draw.

Illusion, Did not like grip and heavy bow.

Vengence, grip felt ok, but THICK. And heavier than AR35 and Diablo.

AR35 - Had a slight twang that a set of dampeners Pro put on cleared it completely. Probably the lighter weight of the near bare bow compared to the Vengence and Illusion was the difference. Shot extremely well. Dad has an AR34, so I knew it would. Excellent grip, but had a little torque in my hand as I settled into my draw.

Diablo - ever so slight twang, my brother felt it has more than AR... but I did think it was any more than the AR.
We did not bother to put HDS on the Diablo riser. I saw how well they worked on the AR and knew it would take out any there was. Shot as well as the AR easy. But the bow just fell naturally into place for me, both in grip and torque. It just seemed to come right on target each and every time. The small valley took me 4-6 arrows to get used to since I currently shoot a round wheel bow with no valley and no draw stops. But once I really kept the draw tight and made sure there was no creep, I was all set.

They were all so good, it really came down to shooting all 4 and seeing how they felt. But, I was surprised there was so much difference in so many factors of how they felt.

My brother loved the Vengence Grip, but also felt the bow was heavy for hunting once you get all the gear and silencers and think about hiking around a while with it. He liked the Illusion but it did not jump out at him and yell buy me. He REALLLLLYYYY wanted to like the AR best, but again.. he just felt the Diablo just fell into the natural shooting position just the wee bit easier than the AR.

Most accessories I had on my current bow and will be transferred over.

In the End:

2006 Diablo
TR Matrix 3 Pin .19, .29(x2)
WB DX QS
TR RidgeHunter 1 Piece
SCoil
HDS Riser Screw-ins.
Scott Wildcat
Dozen Radial X Arrows

I'll post pics in a couple weekends when I have the bow all set up.
