I went in this morning at 5:30 and waited like have every day
at about 7:45. I saw its signs and it looked like it would be a
good one, didn't think it was that good. I thought I saw some movement
about 80 or 90 yards away. I saw it was a deer, put the scope on
it and could see it had horns but I couldn't tell how big it was.
I knew it was a shooter.
As he walked across the opening, I never saw the rack because
I was trying to get the sights on target. I touched the trigger,
saw him hump up, watched him run for about 50 yards and lost sight
of him. I was going to wait a half- hour, but decided to walk down
and take a look at its tracks. I found its running tracks, backtracked
to the walking and saw no blood. I went back to the running tracks
and found one drop of blood. In about five more steps, I saw a
good splash and about ten steps blood was everywhere. No need to
wait. When I walked up on him I just stood there looking at the
rack. A ten pointer and a good 175 lbs. The weight not that great,
but the rack nearly perfect. What I thought I saw was the deer
running out of sight but it was the deer going down. No deer heart
for Mom though, shot ruined that. Mom’s going to have it mounted
for my Christmas gift. I may have it measured. Charlie thinks it
will score 135 or better. And to think I came within a blink or
two of staying in bed this morning.
One of the worst seasons I have ever had just got a whole lot
better.
